The Collection and Preservation of Plant Material from the Tropical Forest , Canopy

چکیده

The forest canopy harbors a diverse assemblage of plants of many different growth habits. The reproductive parts of tall trees, many epiphytes, and lianas may exist only in the upper canopy. Access to these upper regions is essential to identify canopy plants and to collect and document voucher specimens for a particular forest region. The majority of botanists, however, have relied on collecting techniques that are opportunistic (i.e., "reach and grab") rather than on methodically conducting more comprehensive samples of forest composition. Reproductive parts (essential materials for proper identification and botanical study) and leaves from the upper canopy (whose physical and physiological structure may differ strikingly between the canopy and understory) are not accurately represented in herbaria because collection of these specimens has historically posed an insurmountable challenge. This limits our ability to classify forest plants and our understanding of their taxonomy and ecology. Why collect plant material from the canopy when it is more easily ob-

Understorey bird responses to the edge-interior gradient in an isolated tropical rainforest of Malaysia

Forest fragmentation results in a loss of forest interior and an increase in edge habitat. We studied how understorey bird community composition and habitat variables changed along an edge-to-interior gradient in a 1248-ha lowland rainforest patch in peninsular Malaysia. Birds and environmental variables such as vegetation structure and litter depth were detected within a 25-m radius of each of...

Comparing terrestrial laser scanning and unmanned aerial vehicle structure from motion to assess top of canopy structure in tropical forests

Terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) equipped with digital cameras have attracted much attention from the forestry community as potential tools for forest inventories and forest monitoring. This research fills a knowledge gap about the viability and dissimilarities of using these technologies for measuring the top of canopy structure in tropical forests. In an em...

Isotopic characteristics of canopies in simulated leaf assemblages

The geologic history of closed-canopy forests is of great interest to paleoecologists and paleoclimatologists alike. Closed canopies have pronounced effects on local, continental and global rainfall and temperature patterns. Although evidence for canopy closure is difficult to reconstruct from the fossil record, the characteristic isotope gradients of the “canopy effect” could be preserved in l...

Introducing the improved Forest Canopy density (FCD) model for frequent assessment of Hyrcanian forest

Mapping of forest extent is a prerequisite to acquire quantitative and qualitative information about forests and to formulate management and conservation strategies. forest canopy density (FCD) model is one of the useful RS methods for forest mapping using satellite images. One of the most serious challenges in FCD model is the weakness in the calculation of canopy density in low density forest...

Tropical Rainforest Ecology from a Canopy Perspective

Many processes that are fundamental to tropical rainforest maintenance and regeneration take place in the forest canopy. Recently developed access techniques afford biologists nondestructive means to document and quantify canopy biota and their accompanying activities and interactions. Results from studies involving within-canopy observations and measurements of nutrient cycling, epiphyte distr...
